Dear St. Matthias Families:
¡Hola! My name is Mariclare Kanaley and I am happy to announce that I am St. Matthias’s new Spanish teacher! I am a graduate of Marquette University’s College of Education & am a native of Glenview, IL.
I come from a big family and grew up around this area, beginning at Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Glenview and continuing on to Loyola Academy in Wilmette. In college, I studied Education, Psychology, and Social Studies, and am also a licensed teacher in the state of Wisconsin. After graduation, I taught for 2 years in the Milwaukee Public School system, which I absolutely loved. I was a Middle School (6-8 grade) Social Studies teacher, and also worked in a pull-out program for students who needed some extra help in school. In 2011, I realized that while I was a teacher of language & culture, I spoke only one language and knew only my own culture. I decided to travel and broaden my horizons.
I decided to teach English in Spain and explore the world. I left in August of 2013, and have just recently returned this past June. While in Spain, I worked with Spanish-speaking students aged 3 years – 8th grade, providing instruction in both English and Spanish. I traveled from classroom to classroom, sharing lessons on my native culture and language and using exciting and creative techniques with the limited resources we had. Now, I’m excited to have those roles reversed and to utilize all my teaching & language instruction (and learning!) experience to work with all the students in our classrooms. I have come back ready to continue my journey as an educator, and am grateful to have the opportunity to teach and learn with your children.
I am a strong proponent of the International Baccalaureate Program, and will take every step possible to ensure that our kids not only become familiar with the Spanish language, but also learn to become citizens of our world. A language as rich and historic as Spanish will serve them tremendously as they grow, and will open up communication and understanding of the millions of Spanish-speakers with whom we share both our community and our world. It is a window of opportunity that I hope to work together to provide through my own instruction, the students’ interest and motivation, and of course with the help of all of you at home!
I am hoping for clear and open communication between myself and all parents and guardians, so please be sure to check for updates to help me get to know your children and your families. I’m looking forward to meeting you and am hopeful for an exciting and successful year!
Please feel free to contact me via e-mail at your convenience with any questions or concerns: [email protected]
Sincerely,
Ms. Kanaley
